‘Being a new sector, renewable energy jobs are flexible’

NEW DELHI: The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, is helping create awareness about the career opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

“There is huge scope in this segment now. It is the kind of work that helps heal the planet and helps people live their lives in harmony with nature,” said Sonam Wangchuk, founder director of the institute.

“The need of the hour is to adapt quickly with the changing circumstances,” said Wangchuk. As a result, though there is a vision policy in place and the government has been trying to promote the sector, not many youngsters are opting for it. “Educational institutions launch a course when they see a demand for it. Currently, some of the institutes in India are offering courses related to renewable energy sector but the number is still small. The reason could be they want to make sure that there are enough students and that the number of students who go for the courses get adequate employment opportunities,” said R Somasundaram, Head of Strategic Initiatives, Mytrah Energy.

He suggested that those who want to make a career in the renewable energy sector should explore and ask around what kind of opportunities are available in the segment.

As most of the companies in the sector are fairly new and young, they are quite flexible and adaptive, he added.
