PHOENIX – The city of El Mirage announced Tuesday that four free electric vehicle charging stations are now available for the public to use.

The charging stations can be found at the El Mirage Police Department located at 12401 W. Cinnabar Ave.

“This is a significant step in upholding our environmental responsibilities that our residents and visitors deserve,” El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo said in a press release. “By providing sustainable resources and opportunities in our community, I am confident this will encourage people to consider using alternative options that will have a lasting impact for generations to come.”

El Mirage applied to APS to become a participant of the “APS Take Charge AZ” pilot program, in which APS installs and maintains the charging stations while the city pays for the energy use.

“With the number of electric vehicles expected to grow exponentially in the state over the next 10 years, Take Charge AZ wants to make it easier for drivers to go electric by increasing access to charging stations in Arizona’s local communities,” Daniel Haughton, APS’ director of customer to grid solutions, said in the release.

“We are proud to collaborate with the city of El Mirage and look forward to gathering feedback from our local leaders to improve the program and enhance the experience for drivers – all while working together towards a clean energy future.”

APS has partnered with many Arizona businesses and multifamily communities to provide more access to electric vehicle charging.

A total of 84 charging stations were installed in 2020 through the Take Charge AZ program.

There are roughly 35,000 electric vehicle owners in the state of Arizona, according to APS.
