The City of Washington is working with state officials to install several electric vehicle charging stations across the town.

“Some businesses around the community have heard from visitors that they’re looking for charging stations and currently there are very few within the city limits. It’s an amenity we want to offer,” said Jonathan Russell, Washington City Manager.

“Things are trending that way as far as being more environmentally conscious and that’s something we want to be a part of.”

The current plan involves six electric vehicle charging stations to be installed. The stations will be installed in three different locations with two of the charging stations at each location. The locations are preliminary in nature and can change as the process moves forward.

“We’re doing an analysis currently to see what the feasibility is with the locations we’ve selected,” Russell said. The locations currently being considered are downtown Washington, the city center and the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex.

The city is working with Duke Energy and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to secure funding for the six charging stations.

“They have grant opportunities that we’re pursuing and we’re working with both agents to make sure that we meet the criteria for the applications. We’re working through the logistics of how to implement the funds,” Russell said.

Once available, the charging stations will be available for public use for a fee that is to be determined.

“It would be a fee based on the amount of energy used. I think it would vary per vehicle and how much energy was used but it will be fee based,” Russell said.

The charging stations will serve any electric vehicle currently available to consumers and will have the standard level two charger that is universal to all electric vehicles. Russell is hopeful that the charging stations can be installed and fully operational sometime this fall.
