Latin American utility group Enel Colombia has started building a 132.2-MW (direct current) solar farm in the Magdalena department of Colombia, launching a project that secured a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in the Colombian government’s renewable energy auction in 2021.

Through its renewables unit, Enel Green Power, the group will invest close to USD 109 million (EUR 109.7m) in the Fundacion solar plant project, it announced in a press release last week. Fundacion will be equipped with more than 244,800 solar panels installed on a 237-hectare (585.6 acres) site in the municipality of Pivijay.

Once up and running, the solar farm will upload some 227 GWh per year to the Colombian grid between 2023 and 2037, operating under a PPA. The project was one of 11 to be awarded a long-term off-take contract in the October 2021 auction.

The latest project comes after Enel Green Power started construction works on a the 486.7-MW (DC) Guayepo I & II solar project in Colombia about a month ago.

At present, the green energy firm has close to 1,100 MW of renewables under construction in Colombia and some 60 MW in Central America. Its renewables capacity in the region will surpass 5,000 MW in the next three years, said Eugenio Calderon, manager of Enel Green Power in Colombia and Central America.
