  • EWA has announced a tender to invite bids from qualified contractors to remediate a landfill site for a solar power plant

  • The solar power plant is planned to be located in Askar with a minimum capacity of 100 MW

  • EWA said it will also be issuing an RFP to develop the 100 MW solar power plant on the remediated landfill site

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) in Bahrain is looking for a qualified contractor to remediate a 2 km2 landfill site in Askar, which will then be ready to host a solar power plant with a minimum of 100 MW capacity.

Selected contractor will be tasked with design and construction of a landfill gas extraction and treatment system to meet the requirements of environmental standards as per the Supreme Council of Environment requirements. For smooth construction and operation of the solar power plant, the winner will need to ensure land remediation, development of gas and leachate management systems and drainage system.

“Converting this landfill site to a solar farm capable of producing 100 MW is one of many steps the country hopes to execute to realize the objective of bringing carbon emissions in Bahrain to net zero by 2060,” said EWA President Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed.

Parallelly, the EWA will be issuing a request for proposal (RFP) to develop a 100 MW solar plant on the remediated landfill.

Having launched the tender on September 28, 2022, EWA will be accepting bids till November 13, 2022.

In February 2019, there were local media reports of EWA having awarded the contract to build a 100 MW solar power plant on a landfill site in Askar to a consortium of ACWA Power, Mitsui & Company and AlMoayyed
