The government had provided ₹600 crore in incentives to as many as 3.61 lakh electric vehicles since the FAME scheme was launched in April 2015.

India’s electric mobility revolution seems to gather pace with every passing day. We say that because off late an increasing number of states across the country have announced their individual EV policies.

Somewhere in the middle of all the state EV policies, the central government also made some updates to the FAME 2 scheme in order to further boost the adoption of EVs, especially electric two-wheelers, e three-wheelers, and electric buses.

Anyway, there has been some more movement in regards to FAME II. By 6 July, the government had installed 350 new EV charging stations across the country. The chargers for electric vehicles have been installed in cities such as Chandigarh (48), Delhi (94), Jaipur (49), Ranchi (29), and Agra (10) under the purview of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India Scheme.

Krishan Pal Gurjar, Minister of State for Heavy Industries, informed the Parliament that 520 charging stations and infrastructure worth ₹43.4 crore had been sanctioned under FAME I. The department has also sanctioned 2,877 EV charging stations, worth ₹500 crore, across 68 cities. Gurjar added that by 9 July, 2021, the Ministry had provided ₹600 crore in incentives to as many as 3.61 lakh electric vehicles since the FAME scheme was launched in April 2015.

This growing support for EVs and the ecosystem is starting to bear results too. More and more automakers are starting to bring in their electric vehicles in India. In fact, just today Audi India launched the e-tron SUV and the e-tron Sportback with prices starting at ₹1 crore (ex-showroom, pan India).
