FFI To Explore Feasibility of 9.2 GW Wind & Solar Powered Green Hydrogen Project In Egypt – EQ Mag Pro

Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), a green energy company from Australia, and the Government of Egypt are looking at developing a green hydrogen project in the African country, with 9.2 GW installed capacity powered by wind and solar energy.

They have already entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct studies exploring the potential of green hydrogen production in the country. Part of the discussions also revolved around localization of industries related to power generation from solar and wind as solar panels and wind turbines.

“Egypt’s excellent wind and solar resources can generate the renewable energy required to produce large scale green electricity, green hydrogen and green ammonia,” said FFI Founder and Executive Chairman Dr Andrew Forrest during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently. Egypt is hosting United National Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November 2022.

The Egyptian President directed his administration to facilitate all necessary support to expedite the implementation of green power projects under cooperation with the FFI.

Part of the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), FFI aims to produce 15 million tons of green hydrogen from 100% renewable energy sources by 2030 and scale it up to 50 million tons by 2040. It has a widened geographical focus, from Australia to now Africa. In March 2022, the company entered into an MoU with Germany’s E.ON to deliver up to 5 million tons of green hydrogen to Europe by 2030 (see 5 Million Ton Green Hydrogen For Europe).

In August 2022, it held an in-person information session in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador to discuss the potential of renewable energy production on the island portion of the province. It has filed a registration for an environmental assessment for its green hydrogen production and export development.
