A project named Mini grids is currently underway in Ghana. The project is aimed to install 55 small-scale renewable electricity production and distribution systems in island communities on the Volta Lake.

The Mini grids project has so far attracted a gigantic investment of around USD 230 million in the name of its implementation, which is being executed by the Volta River Authority (VRA) under the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) in low-income countries. Funded by Strategic Climate Fund (SCF), the programme is likely to enhance renewable energy solutions and expand access to those solutions in Ghana.

While disclosing more about the project Mini grids, Robert Sogbadji, Deputy Director of Alternative Energy at the Ministry of Energy recently said that the government of Ghana had already installed five of the mini grids to the beneficiary communities. Another three are likely to be installed in Azizakpe, Aflive and Alokpem island communities in the Ada East District by the end of 2019.

Around 17 percent of Ghana’s population does not access to electricity with 2.9 million of them residing in lakeside and island communities on the Volta River. The target is to establish 55 mini grids by 2020, as reported by Graphic Online.
