Portuguese renewables company Greenvolt – Energias Renovaveis SA (ELI:GVOLT) has been awarded 1.2 GW of BESS projects in a Polish capacity auction held in December 2023.

Through its global development subsidiary Greenvolt Power, the company secured over 70% of the BESS capacity allocated in the auction held by Poland’s transmission grid operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. (PSE).

Greenvolt was successful with six projects. The Portuguese firm will now act as reserve capacity for the local grid when the minimum system capacity is not guaranteed.

In total, Greenvolt took part with 1.4 GW of grid-secured capacity, achieving 1.2 GW of awarded long-term capacity payments. The contracts cover 17 years of capacity payment obligation at a fixed CPI-indexed yearly price of PLN 244.90 (USD 61.67/EUR 56.34) per kW.

“With this successful outcome of the capacity auction and additional energy storage projects in its pipeline in other countries, Greenvolt Power became one of the top BESS players in Europe and a major BESS developer on the global scale, having, in particular, the biggest BESS portfolio in the world with a secured contract,” Greenvolt’s CEO Joao Manso Neto said.
