AHMEDABAD: Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) is all set to become electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries manufacturing cluster, according to top officials of Gujarat government. The state government officials are in talks with Indian as well as foreign companies in the e-vehicle and battery manufacturing sector that have shown interest in setting up manufacturing facility in DSIR.
Speaking at a joint conference on Sustainable Mobility: ‘A New Era of E-Mobility’, organized in Ahmedabad on Saturday, chief secretary J N Singh said that DSIR will take the lead in promoting sustainable mobility and bring about an EV revolution to India.

Sharing more details, Jaiprakash Shivhare, managing director, Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd (DICDL), said, “A lot of Indian companies have inquired for setting up e-vehicle and battery manufacturing in DSIR. One foreign company has also shown interest for setting up battery manufacturing plant in DSIR. We are pitching to help create an ecosystem for e-mobility.”

“Power is one of the key requirements for battery manufacturing and at Dholera, we are making power available at a very cheap rate and that is one of the most favourable conditions for battery manufacturing. This can also help bring down input costs,” he added. State government officials said that Tata Chemicals has already procured land at DSIR to set up a lithiumion battery manufacturing plant.

Niti Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant, also delivered the keynote address at the conclave, through video conference. Laying further emphasis on improving e-mobility in India, he said, “The focus on electrification presents India with a powerful opportunity to emerge as a leader in clean, connected and shared mobility solutions. From the perspective of energy security, emobility solutions will reduce dependence on oil imports and as a result, help lower our trade deficit as well and limit our vulnerability towards world-supply disruptions.”

Speaking on DSIR, he said, “Dholera is the biggest planned effort the government of Gujarat and the Government of India and it must become the first green city of the world, where there will only be green vehicles.”
