In Short : Chennai’s power demand has surged by 15%, reaching 3,800 MW, as hot and humid weather persists. Daily energy use has exceeded 80 million units. Tamil Nadu’s overall consumption also rose due to high night temperatures and increased farming activity. Solar and wind power are helping meet demand, with possible rains from June 11 expected to ease the pressure.

In Detail : Chennai has witnessed a sharp rise in electricity demand due to the ongoing hot and sultry weather conditions. The city’s power consumption has climbed from around 3,300 MW in May to approximately 3,800 MW in recent days, marking a notable 15% increase. This spike highlights the direct impact of rising temperatures on energy usage patterns.

The daily energy consumption in the city has also increased significantly, surpassing 80 million units, which is 10 million more than the usual monthly average of 70 million units. The persistent use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances is believed to be a major contributor to this surge in demand.

According to officials from the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL), if the hot and humid conditions continue, Chennai might soon exceed its all-time high peak demand of 4,769 MW. The power infrastructure is currently coping, but concerns remain about sustainability if the trend persists.

On a broader scale, the entire state of Tamil Nadu is also experiencing higher energy consumption. Peak demand has approached 18,500 MW, with daily usage crossing 400 million units. The increase is being driven not only by high temperatures but also by a rise in agricultural activity requiring increased irrigation and water pumping.

Despite the rise in power consumption, the state has managed to maintain supply without resorting to emergency purchases, thanks to steady solar power generation of nearly 40 million units and strong wind power output of more than 70 million units during evening hours. These renewable sources are playing a key role in offsetting peak loads.

Weather forecasts suggest Chennai will continue to see high temperatures in the coming days, with highs around 39°C and lows near 28°C. However, thunderstorms expected around June 8 and 9 may bring temporary relief. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and conserve electricity wherever possible during this high-demand period.
