In Short : Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has achieved 92% localisation in production with its new battery-pack facility, strengthening its commitment to India’s EV ecosystem. The facility enhances domestic manufacturing, reducing reliance on imports and cutting costs. This move aligns with the government’s Make in India initiative, boosting self-reliance and accelerating the country’s electric mobility transition.
In Detail : Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) showcased its indigenisation efforts at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, demonstrating their dedication to “Make-in-India.” Through a targeted indigenisation roadmap, HMIL has achieved up to 92 per cent localisation in production.
New battery-pack facility
HMIL has started local battery-pack assembly at a recently commissioned state-of-the-art facility within its Chennai manufacturing site. The first vehicle to use locally made battery packs from the plant is the Hyundai CRETA Electric. HMIL’s localisation efforts have created direct job opportunities for more than 1,400 people and resulted in FX savings of US $672 million (Rs 5,678 Crore+).
HMIL and Mobis India Limited commissioned the battery-pack assembly plant. The plant can build NMC (Lithium Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt Oxide) and LFP (Lithium Iron-Phosphate) battery packs, among others. This helps HMIL reduce battery prices and accelerate availability for Hyundai EVs made in India.
Achieving localisation
HMIL is dedicated to building a “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by targeted localisation of India’s resources, highly qualified labour force, and engineering know-how. For important components like disc brakes, alloy wheels, and alternators, HMIL has achieved 100 per cent localisation.
Building strategic partnerships with its supplier chain is the key to this achievement. For the first time in India, HMIL has localised high-tech parts like NOX sensors, oil coolers, inflators, panoramic sunroofs and tire pressure monitoring systems.
