IKEA Australia on Wednesday said it will install solar panels and an energy storage system to power its Adelaide store, feeding any excess electricity into the power grid.

IKEA Adelaide has a goal to be 100% renewable by 2025.

As part of the project’s first stage, photovoltaic (PV) modules will be installed on the store’s rooftop together with an onsite battery. In the second stage, PV share structures with additional solar modules will be set up across the store’s car park.

Chargers for electric vehicle (EV) will also be installed at the store for customers, employees and the IKEA delivery fleet that services the state of South Australia.

IKEA Australia is partnering on the project with Queensland-based renewable energy firm Planet Ark Power, the South Australian government, local utility SA Power Networks and infrastructure company Epic Energy.

The project is part of IKEA Australia’s efforts aimed at sourcing 100% from its power from renewable energy and transitioning to a carbon-free delivery fleet.

IKEA Australia is part of Ingka Group, which owns and operates IKEA stores under a franchise agreement with the Swedish furniture and home accessories group. Ingka aims to be climate positive by 2030.
