Targeting 5 million tonnes of annual production by 2030, the country is developing green hydrogen hubs, fostering innovation, and promoting international partnerships. These efforts aim to decarbonize industries, enhance energy security, and position India as a competitive exporter of green hydrogen.

In Detail : India is rapidly positioning itself as a global leader in green hydrogen, driven by the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in January 2023. The initiative, backed by ₹19,744 crore, aims to develop India into a hub for green hydrogen production, utilization, and export, reflecting the government’s focus on clean energy and low-carbon technologies.

The mission targets an annual production of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen by 2030. This ambitious goal is supported by an estimated 125 GW of renewable energy capacity, leveraging India’s abundant solar, wind, and hydropower resources to produce clean hydrogen efficiently.

To achieve these targets, the government is creating green hydrogen hubs in strategic regions. These hubs will provide infrastructure for large-scale production, storage, and transportation while facilitating industrial consumption, particularly in states such as Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, which have high renewable energy potential and strong industrial bases.

Innovation and research are central to India’s green hydrogen strategy. The government has launched schemes to support pilot projects in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and utilization technologies, encouraging startups and research institutions to develop advanced solutions that can enhance the efficiency and scalability of the sector.

International collaboration is also a key aspect of India’s approach. Projects like the partnership between Juno Joule Green Energy Pvt Ltd and Germany’s Select Energy GmbH aim to produce green hydrogen and ammonia near Andhra Pradesh’s Mulapeta port, with a target of 180 kilo tonnes per annum by 2029, focused on exports.

Green hydrogen is expected to play a vital role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors such as steel, cement, and aviation. By replacing fossil fuels, India can enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and support the country’s net-zero target by 2070, creating a sustainable industrial ecosystem.

Policy measures are being implemented to lower the cost of green hydrogen production. By providing financial incentives, regulatory support, and infrastructure development, India aims to become a competitive player in the global green hydrogen market, potentially achieving up to 10 MMT per year in production capacity over the long term.

The development of supporting infrastructure, including desalination plants, renewable-powered electrolysers, and port-connected pipelines, is crucial for both domestic utilization and exports. These investments are expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate economic growth in regions hosting green hydrogen projects.
