In Short : The Indian government will launch tenders for 4 GW of offshore wind energy off Tamil Nadu’s coast, offering four 1 GW sea blocks under SECI. Developers will have full seabed lease rights and can sell power directly to consumers or via exchanges. This move aims to boost offshore wind capacity and support India’s 2030 renewable energy goals.

In Detail : The central government has announced plans to float tenders for 4 GW of offshore wind energy capacity off the coast of Tamil Nadu. The initiative marks a significant step in India’s efforts to diversify its renewable energy portfolio and tap into the vast offshore wind potential along its coastline.

The tenders will be issued by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), with four sea blocks of 1 GW each being offered to developers. These projects will operate under an open-access model, allowing developers to sell power directly to consumers or through power exchanges, rather than relying on government-backed viability gap funding.

This tender marks a departure from earlier models where financial support was provided to bridge the cost difference. Developers will receive full leasing rights for seabed use, giving them greater autonomy to develop, own, and operate the offshore wind projects independently.

The government believes that this approach will attract serious investors and developers with long-term commitments to the offshore wind sector. It also aligns with India’s vision of achieving 37 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 as part of its broader renewable energy targets.

Tamil Nadu has been identified as a promising location for offshore wind development due to its favorable wind speeds and established port infrastructure. The state already plays a key role in India’s onshore wind energy sector and is expected to become a hub for offshore wind as well.

This move is expected to accelerate the development of India’s offshore wind industry, boost domestic manufacturing, and create new employment opportunities. It also reinforces the country’s commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint.
