In Detail : During April 2024 to February 2025, India’s public EV charging stations consumed approximately 764 million units (MU) of electricity, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). This significant consumption reflects the rising adoption of electric vehicles and the expanding network of charging infrastructure across the country. The data highlights how the shift towards sustainable mobility is gaining momentum.

Delhi emerged as the top consumer, accounting for 306.02 MU, which represents around 40.11% of the total electricity consumed at EV charging stations during this period. This leading position can be attributed to the city’s robust EV policy, which encourages the adoption of electric vehicles through subsidies, incentives, and a dense network of charging points. The capital’s strategic push for e-mobility has positioned it as a pioneer in the sector.

Following Delhi, Maharashtra recorded the second-highest consumption with 192.28 MU, making up 25.20% of the total. Karnataka, known for its tech-driven urban hubs, accounted for 64.66 MU or 8.48%, while Gujarat contributed 58.31 MU, representing 7.64% of the electricity usage. These states have been proactive in implementing EV-friendly policies and building extensive charging networks.

The rise in electricity consumption at EV charging stations aligns with the Indian government’s initiatives to promote electric mobility. The ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme has been instrumental in fostering this transition by supporting the development of charging infrastructure and offering incentives to both manufacturers and consumers. As more people embrace electric vehicles, the demand for charging facilities continues to grow steadily.

Monthly data indicates a consistent rise in electricity consumption at these stations, highlighting an upward trend in EV usage. Industry experts believe that this pattern will persist as cities increasingly prioritize sustainable transportation solutions. The presence of public charging stations in urban and semi-urban areas is playing a crucial role in reducing range anxiety among potential EV buyers.

The Central Electricity Authority’s findings emphasize the critical role of state-specific policies and infrastructure development in driving the adoption of electric mobility. As more states follow Delhi’s example by enhancing charging infrastructure and offering incentives, India is set to witness a more rapid transition towards greener and more sustainable transport options.
