In Details : India witnessed a significant surge in power demand during June, reaching a record peak of 2.42 lakh megawatts (MW) on June 12. This marks one of the highest recorded demands in the country’s history, reflecting both seasonal pressures and rising industrial energy consumption.

Throughout the month, the national power grid successfully supplied 1.5 lakh million units (MU) of electricity. This steady delivery ensured minimal disruptions despite the sharp rise in consumption, indicating improved grid management and capacity readiness during peak periods.

The average daily peak demand in June stood at 2.22 lakh MW, highlighting a consistently high load across most days. The spike is largely attributed to the intense heatwave experienced across several regions, which drove up air conditioning and cooling usage across residential and commercial sectors.

In addition to weather conditions, increased manufacturing and infrastructure activity also contributed to the demand hike. As industries operated at higher capacities, their energy needs grew, putting additional strain on the already high base demand from households.

Experts note that while the grid’s performance was commendable, the rising trend in peak power demand calls for accelerated investments in generation capacity, storage, and demand-side management solutions. Balancing this growth with sustainability goals will remain a key challenge.

Moving forward, energy planners will need to factor in climate variability, population growth, and industrial expansion. Strengthening transmission networks and integrating more renewable energy sources will be critical in maintaining grid stability amid rising national electricity needs.
