A grouping of sunshine countries to promote solar energy, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President Francoise Hollande, looks to include nations beyond the tropics.

The International Solar Alliance, launched at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, is a platform for cooperation among sun-rich countries lying fully or partially between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. When the alliance was announced, 121 nations situated between the tropics that receive 300 days of sunlight annually were deemed eligible for membership.

“Many countries like Spain, Germany, Italy, Mongolia and Nepal want to join us,” Upendra Tripathy, the alliance’s interim director general, said at an event in Delhi today. “The ISA assembly may consider amending the original treaty to permit countries that are lying beyond the tropics to become its members.”

After this, Tripathy said, members of the United Nations can join the International Solar Alliance.

Sixty-eight countries are signatory to the treaty, while 40 have ratified it. It plans to include more nations to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
