Four projects totalling 3,074 MW have been successful in Ireland’s first offshore wind auction under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS 1), it was announced today.

The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications said that the results have surpassed expectations, both in terms of the energy procured and the price achieved. The average price of EUR 86.05 (USD 94.55) per MWh was described as “hugely competitive” and one of the lowest paid by an emerging offshore wind market.

The successful projects are in the table below:

Project Applicant Offer quantity
Dublin Array Kish Offshore Wind Limited and Bray Offshore Wind Limited 824 MW
Sceirde Rocks Offshore Wind Farm Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta 450 MW
North Irish Sea Array (NISA) North Irish Sea Array Windfarm Limited 500 MW
Codling Wind Park Codling Wind Park Limited 1,300 MW

Codling Wind Park Ltd is a joint venture between EDF Renewables and Fred Olsen Seawind. NISA is being developed by Statkraft and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Dublin Array is a project of RWE, while Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta is owned by Corio Generation.

The four projects together are expected to produce over 12 TWh a year, equivalent to more than one-third of Ireland’s electricity consumption this year.

The ORESS 1 auction was open to six offshore wind projects. The two unsuccessful projects may still secure a route to market through a corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) or a future ORESS auction, the government noted.

The auction results, which were announced by EirGrid, are provisional and are subject to confirmation and state aid processes, which are expected to be finalised by mid-June.
