The Indian state of Maharashtra has decided to offer subsidy to spinning mills and textile units interested in setting up solar power plants in their respective premises.

The Government has formed a committee headed by Textile Director to extend support to them. Director General of Maharashtra Energy Development Agency and an official from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. will also be part of the body.

The committee has been asked to finalise the details of the proposed subsidy, eligibility criteria to avail benefits, and form a plan for the implementation.

It is worth adding here that the new textile policy announced by the State Government in February this year also has a provision to reduce the power tariffs and increase the capital subsidy to 45 per cent for spinning mills.

The Government has also decided to encourage spinning mills to establish solar power plants on their land in the new textile policy announced.

Higher power tariffs in Maharashtra compared to other states have resulted in losses for spinning mills in the state. This was the major reason for the Government to encourage spinning mills to set up solar power plants as it will help them to reduce their power bills.

Notably, Maharashtra has higher power tariff as compared to other states such as neighbouring Gujarat and Karnataka.
