MALAKOFF Corp Bhd and Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia Bhd (KPDRM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to assess the feasibility of jointly developing rooftop solar projects.

The solar projects would be developed at selected PDRM building premises in Peninsular Malaysia.

“The collaboration comes under the Net Energy Metering 3.0 scheme or for self-consumption, whereby electricity generated from solar energy will be supplied to PDRM under a long-term solar power purchase agreement,” Malakoff said in a statement last week.

The power generated from these projects will be at a lower tariff than the electricity tariff from the national grid, thus resulting in potential cost savings for PDRM.

Malakoff MD and CEO Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib said the collaboration is yet another milestone in Malakoff’s expansion in the renewable energy (RE) segment as it embarks on a transformation journey towards decarbonisation by 2050.

“As RE in Malaysia is expected to account for 31% of the capacity mix by 2025, Malakoff aims to be at the forefront of the country’s transition towards sustainable energy by leveraging on our proven track record in technical and commercial insights.

“To date, we have successfully secured rooftop solar projects with a total capacity of 22.32MW with several reputable clients and we will continue to explore potential opportunities with strategic partners such as PDRM,” Anwar Syahrin said.

He said Malakoff is looking forward to supporting PDRM’s sustainability goals via the use of RE energy as an initiative in supporting the government’s RE targets.

“We shall remain true to our value creation ideals by continuing our sustainability-centred initiatives to create tangible benefits for our ecosystem of stakeholders in the long run,” he added.

Malakoff’s unit Malakoff Radiance Sdn Bhd had recently secured six rooftop solar projects with DRB-Hicom Group in addition to its collaboration with the country’s largest mall operator AEON Co (M) Bhd and renowned logistics industry players such as Northport (M) Bhd, Johor Port Bhd and Pos Malaysia Bhd.

All these projects combined will generate 33,243MW hours per annum and neutralise 23,070 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

Malakoff’s accelerated expansion in the solar segment is part of its transformation agenda, aligned with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The company embarks to achieve carbon neutrality and eventually net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
