In Short : MIEPL has won SECI’s bid to develop a 4.125 MW solar project at IIT Kharagpur, comprising rooftop, ground-mounted, and elevated installations. Executed under the RESCO model, the grid-connected project will be completed in 270 days without battery storage. MIEPL will operate and maintain the system for 25 years, advancing India’s renewable energy and campus sustainability goals.

In Detail : MIEPL has been awarded a contract by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to develop a 4.125 MW solar power project at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in West Bengal. The project will comprise a combination of rooftop, ground-mounted, and elevated solar installations, contributing to the campus’s sustainability initiatives.

The project includes a 2,900 kW rooftop solar system, a 1,000 kW ground-mounted installation, and a 225 kW elevated structure. MIEPL is required to complete the entire project within a span of 270 days. The solar modules used in the installation must be from the government’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

MIEPL will operate the solar systems under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. Under this model, MIEPL will invest in, install, and maintain the solar systems, while IIT Kharagpur will purchase the electricity generated from these systems. The project will be grid-connected, but it will not include battery storage.

As part of the project, MIEPL will handle the installation of solar arrays, module mounting structures, inverters with maximum power point trackers, safety devices, and switchgear. The company will also manage the operation and maintenance of the systems for a period of 25 years, ensuring their long-term performance.

This solar project aligns with India’s renewable energy goals, supporting the nation’s commitment to meeting 50% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by 2030. The project at IIT Kharagpur serves as a step forward in achieving India’s ambitious sustainability targets.

By integrating these solar installations across the IIT Kharagpur campus, MIEPL is not only enhancing the institution’s energy efficiency but also setting a benchmark for other academic and research institutions in the country to follow. The project will serve as a model for sustainable energy solutions in educational and research settings.
