We have to first create the domestic market, one of them with rooftop photovoltaic power stations, then we can drive the growth of domestic industry.

Jakarta (ANTARA) : The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has said it will continue to expedite the growth of rooftop photovoltaic power stations to develop Indonesia’s renewable energy industry.

“We have to first create the domestic market, one of them with rooftop photovoltaic power stations, then we can drive the growth of domestic industry,” director general of the renewable energy and energy conservation at the ministry, Dadan Kusdiana, said during an online discussion observed here on Friday.

The revision of the ministry’s regulation regarding the utilization of rooftop photovoltaic power stations can fulfill the need of industries that support those power stations, he noted.

Consumer interest in using green products made from eco-friendly processes has compelled factories to use clean energy, Kusdiana explained.

He opined that there is an urgent need to revise the regulation in face of the global challenge related to green products consumption that have to be met by the industry sector so that products can stay competitive and be accepted by consumers.

“Once it develops, this can nurture the domestic solar power plant industry. We can add the capacity and have an industry to create (photovoltaic) cells that we still import at the moment,” Kusdiana added.

The presence of an industry that supports rooftop photovoltaic power stations will allow for a more competitive price for their installation, he pointed out.

Kusdiana revealed that his office has continued to communicate with the Ministry of Industry and associations on building the capacity of the local rooftop photovoltaic power stations industry in Indonesia.

Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as of July 2021, the number of rooftop photovoltaic power stations users has reached 4,028, with 35.56 megawatt of peak capacity.

In January 2018, the number of rooftop photovoltaic power station users in Indonesia was only 351 customers, so the number of customers that use these power stations has increased by 1.047 percent in a span of three years, the data shows.
