In Short : The MNRE has invited proposals to advance reuse and recycling in solar and battery technologies under its RE-RTD program. With funding up to ₹30 crore per project, the initiative targets material recovery from PV and battery waste. Proposals must focus on innovative, scalable solutions, aiming to build a circular economy in India’s clean energy sector.

In Detail : The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a call for proposals focused on promoting reuse and recycling in solar photovoltaic and battery technologies. This initiative is part of the ministry’s broader goal to support sustainable development and minimize the environmental impact of clean energy infrastructure.

The proposals fall under MNRE’s Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development (RE-RTD) program, which encourages research and innovation to improve renewable energy systems. This particular call targets end-of-life solutions for solar panels and batteries, including the recovery of valuable materials like silicon, lithium, cobalt, copper, and nickel.

India’s growing solar and battery installations are expected to generate large volumes of e-waste in the coming years. The ministry is addressing this challenge by fostering circular economy practices and improving compliance with India’s Electronic Waste Management Rules.

Projects selected under this initiative can receive grants covering up to 60% of the total project cost, capped at ₹30 crore. The funding can be used for research, development, and setting up recycling infrastructure, with up to 50% of the grant disbursed upfront to support initial procurement and setup.

The MNRE is encouraging a wide range of applicants, including research institutions, universities, startups, NGOs, and private companies. Proposals will be assessed based on technical feasibility, innovation, scalability, and their potential societal and environmental impact.

The deadline for submissions is July 29, 2025. Applications must be submitted via the National Institute of Solar Energy’s online portal. Through this initiative, the government aims to strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem while ensuring that growth in renewables is both sustainable and environmentally responsible.
