Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser will supply a 20MW PEM solution to a Spanish project constructing what is believed to be the largest green hydrogen plant for industrial use in Europe, in a deal valued at €13.5m.

Spanish multinational electric utility company Iberdrola and fertiliser and industrial chemicals specialist Fertiberia unveiled plans for the facility last year (2020).

Iberdrola will be responsible for the production of green hydrogen from 100% renewable sources.

The solution will consist of a 100MW photovoltaic solar plant, a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20MWh and a large electrolytic hydrogen production system.

The green hydrogen produced at the site will be used at Fertiberia’s ammonia plant in Puertollano, which already boasts a production capacity of more than 200,000 tonnes a year.

Fertiberia previously said it will update and modify the plant to be able to use green hydrogen to manufacture green fertilisers.

“We are excited to finalise the agreement with Iberdrola for a PEM electrolyser solution for this landmark green fertiliser project,” said Filip Smeets, Senior Vice-President of Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser.

“It is a true testament to our PEM platform, which has been deployed all over the world for several decades.”

“We look forward to work with Iberdrola to scale our PEM platform into a 20MW solution and the partnership represents an important step towards our common vision of enabling green hydrogen competitive to fossil hydrogen.”

Concluding, Smeet said, “The Iberdrola project is strategically important for Nel. It requires commercialisation of technology in the form of a new product range addressing a significant market with one of the leading companies in the industry.”

“This partnership with Iberdrola will push our organisation to the limits with technology development, demanding cost reductions and risk mitigation, as it represents an important milestone for the scale-up and roadmap for our future PEM solutions.”
