Nepal is to host the Power Summit 2013 at a joint initiative of Indian and Nepalese companies to meet its energy crisis by hastening the pace of hydropower development through foreign investment.

The Summit aims to meet domestic power demand through increased investment in the power sector, invite foreign investment in hydropower and to prepare ground for export of power mainly to India.

The Summit, at the joint initiative of the Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN) and Power Trading Company (PTC) of India, will be held from August 26 to 27.

Titled “Hastening the pace of hydropower development”, the Summit is geared to catalyse the power development sector into action because there is a general feeling that the enthusiasm and momentum that was in the sector has somehow dissipated over the past few years, the IPPAN said in a statement today.

“Nepal is suffering from energy crisis and we realise that the state of affairs will not change without the public and private sectors coming together in a partnership built on mutual support,” it said.

Nepal has the potential to generate 83,000 MW of hydro electricity with its 6,000 rivers and rivulets that emerge from the Himalayas.

But the country is currently producing just 670 MW of electricity and facing hours of black out every day.
