In Short : NHPC CMD has raised concerns over the unpredictability of renewable energy, emphasizing the need for balanced energy planning. Currently, NHPC operates 8,193 MW, with 18,873 MW under development. The company aims to strengthen India’s green transition by expanding its hydro and solar portfolio while ensuring grid stability through a diversified and reliable energy mix.

In Detail : The Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC has highlighted the challenges posed by the unpredictability of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. He emphasized the importance of having a stable and reliable energy mix to ensure uninterrupted power supply as India accelerates its green transition.

Currently, NHPC has an operational capacity of 8,193 megawatts, primarily from hydroelectric power. This solid base allows the company to contribute significantly to India’s clean energy goals while maintaining grid stability.

In addition to its existing capacity, NHPC is developing projects totaling 18,873 megawatts. These include hydro, solar, and wind projects aimed at diversifying its renewable portfolio and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The CMD noted that while solar and wind are essential to meeting climate targets, their intermittent nature requires the support of stable sources like hydropower and battery storage systems. He stressed the need for integrated planning to balance generation with consumption patterns.

NHPC is also investing in pumped storage projects and other innovations to tackle the variability in renewable energy output. These technologies are expected to play a key role in ensuring grid reliability and supporting large-scale renewable deployment.

With a combined target of over 27,000 megawatts, NHPC is positioning itself as a major force in India’s clean energy landscape. The company aims to lead the transition through a mix of capacity expansion, technological innovation, and strategic planning.
