Hack:

  • Union Prakash Javadekar said that India’s target to increase non-fossil fuel target to 450 GW is unprecedented
  • He also said that PM Modi’s address at the Climate Action Summit was very ‘impactful’

India’s Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar while speaking to Republic TV said that India’s pledge to increase its non-fossil fuel target to 450 Gigawatts (GW) is massive and that it is a significant step in making our country a fossil-fuel-free economy. He also stressed that this has never been done before and no one ever expected that India could do this. This comes after the Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in his address at the United Nation’s Climate Action Summit set a 450 GW target for India’s renewable energy generating capacity. PM Modi said that India plans to increase its capacity to 175 GW by 2022.

Javadekar calls PM Modi’s address ‘Impactful’

Union Minister Javadekar lauded PM Modi’s address at the Climate Action Summit and called his three-minute address as very ‘impactful’. He also said that we have already achieved 80 GW and earlier we had announced to reach 175 GW, which is huge. Javadekar added that in order to make the Earth a fossil-fuel-free economy, 40% of our energy mix should comprise of renewable sources of energy. “We have earlier announced 175 GW and we have done 80 GW, which is huge. We have to create 40% of our energy mix in renewables and that is how we are making the Earth fossil-fuel-free economy. This is how we are going ahead with low carbon power,” he said.

‘No dearth of talent in India,’ says Javadekar

Javadekar also emphasized on the need for collaboration of countries to fight the necessary issue of climate change. He stated that in order for industries to transit from fossil fuel to fossil-fuel-free, affordable technology is the prime requirement. “Industry transition from fossil fuel to fossil-fuel-free, more carbon emission to less carbon emission will be possible through technology. Innovated technologies have to be made available at an affordable cost because that is the most important thing. Those countries that are innovating should collaborate with India where there is no dearth of talent and other countries also have very young talented scientists and collaboration is needed,” the Union Minister said.
