In Short : ReNew, a renewable energy company, has proposed a substantial investment of Rs 26,400 crore for a green hydrogen project in Kerala. This ambitious initiative reflects a commitment to advancing green hydrogen technology and establishing Kerala as a key player in the sustainable energy landscape.

In Detail : ReNew has proposed a Rs 26,400 crore investment for a green hydrogen project in Kerala. The project will have a production capacity of 220 kilo-tonne per annum (ktpa) of green hydrogen.

The green hydrogen capacity will then be used to produce 1,100 ktpa of green ammonia. The project will be powered by a two GW capacity electrolyser, which is 14,000 million units of power annually from five GW to six GW renewable energy plants. It is proposed to be set up at Vizhinjam near its port to make the green hydrogen produced suitable for export.

Besides, it is likely to be completed in three phases, wherein Phase-I will have 100 ktpa of green hydrogen derivative capacity, while Phase-II and Phase-III will have 500 ktpa capacity each. The timeline of each phase is anticipated to be 36 to 42 months.

Further, the project with nearly 50 MLD of water requirement is estimated to employ 4,000 to 5,000 skilled and unskilled staff and 18,000 staff during construction phases.

In November 2022, the company signed a framework agreement with Egypt to establish a green hydrogen plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone with an investment of USD eight billion.
