The first phase of the rooftop solar power project has become operational in the Chennai airport. In an event held on Thursday, Airport Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra inaugurated the 1.5 MW plant.

Chennai airport director Deepak Shastri said the solar plant, built at cost of Rs 8.5 crore, would bring down the power tariff by half. Currently, the airport pays a tariff of Rs 20 crore to the state electricity board. The solar plant would generate 6,150 units a day and reduce carbon emission by 3,600 tonnes per annum.

The return of investment from the plant is Rs 1.8 crore per annum, Shastri said. It is learnt that the AAI has already prepared a blueprint for setting up 7.5 MW of solar plants. The plan to tap solar energy was done under the initiative of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.
