The minister emphasized modernization and sustainable practices to enhance the plant’s competitiveness and reduce its carbon footprint.

In Detail : Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has announced that the Salem Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) will transition towards renewable energy to power its operations. This shift marks a significant step in aligning the plant’s functioning with India’s broader sustainability and clean energy targets.

The move is expected to reduce the plant’s dependence on conventional energy sources and contribute to the national agenda of lowering carbon emissions. By integrating renewable energy, the plant aims to set an example for sustainable industrial operations in the steel sector.

Alongside the green energy transition, the Salem Steel Plant will also focus on expanding its production of specialty steel. This type of high-grade steel is crucial for critical sectors such as defense, aerospace, and infrastructure, and the plant’s enhanced output is expected to support the growth of these industries.

Minister Kumaraswamy emphasized the need for modernization and capacity building to ensure that Indian steel plants remain competitive globally. He noted that upgrading facilities and adopting cleaner technologies will be key to achieving this goal while adhering to environmental standards.

The Salem plant’s expansion plans include the introduction of advanced technologies to improve efficiency and product quality. This will not only help in meeting domestic demands but also open up opportunities for exports in niche markets.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Steel to transform India’s steel sector into a green and globally competitive industry. The focus remains on sustainable development, job creation, and technological innovation across public sector units like SAIL.
