The hub will be opened for public use by 2022.

Sembcorp Industries, through its wholly-owned subsidiary and waste management business SembWaste, launched Singapore’s first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at its Tuas depot, 20 July.

The Sembcorp Green EV Charging Hub, which can charge up to 18 industrial EVs via four-hour fast charging cycles and will have the capacity to conduct about 100 electric charging cycles per day, will be the central charging station for the firm’s fleet of waste and recycling electric trucks.

Sembcorp said it plans to open the facility for public use by other industrial vehicles by 2022.

A 472 kilowatt-peak of rooftop solar photovoltaic capacity has also been installed at the Tuas depot to power the facility, it said, adding that a digital system has also been installed to manage power consumption and monitor optimization of energy use.

Sembcorp said that SembWaste is gradually shifting to electric trucks for refuse and recyclables collection from diesel-powered trucks and will introduce this month a fleet of electric trucks to support waste collection in the Clementi-Bukit Merah and City-Punggol municipal sectors. The fleet of the electric trucks comprises about 20% of SembWaste’s operational fleet for the two sectors.

“Lowering carbon emissions has always been part of our company’s commitment towards environmental sustainability. With the launch of Singapore’s first solar-powered EV charging hub, Sembcorp is pleased to be supporting Singapore’s transport decarbonisation efforts, and look forward to opening up our hub for public use by other industrial vehicles,” Koh Chiap Khiong, CEO, Singapore and Southeast Asia, Sembcorp Industries, said.
