The hot and dry Tabernas Desert in Andalusia, Spain stretches out like a lunar landscape. Thanks to the extraordinary landscape and the title as the only European desert, the landscape enjoys great popularity.

The sandy location is not only suitable as an excursion destination and location for western films, but also for the expansion of photovoltaic systems, because the solar radiation is particularly high there. SENS Ibérica takes advantage of this and, together with its partner Aurinka International, is realizing the 30 MWp solar park “EGA” after the construction of the 50 MWp solar park “La Cabrita”, both of which are part of the 180 MWp Tinosa pipeline.

Another milestone in the Tinosa pipeline

With the completion of the two Tinosa solar parks “EGA” and “La Cabrita” with a total output of 80 MWp, SENS is making further progress in the expansion of photovoltaics in Spain. The 50 MWp solar park ” La Cabrita ” was put into operation last year and duly opened with an inauguration ceremony. At the beginning of the year, the solar park was handed over to the customer Aquila Capital.

Solar park “La Cabrita” in the Spanish desert Tabernas

The PV system “EGA” was put into operation at the beginning of this year and will produce around 60,000 MWh of renewable energy per year in the Spanish desert of Tabernas thanks to the high level of solar radiation. With this plant alone, CO 2 emissions can be reduced by around 28,000 tons in the future.

In the coming weeks, the Tabernas II solar park will be completed jointly with Aurinka International, which will have a total output of 50 MWp and whose construction is already well advanced. The electricity from all four solar parks is bundled in the “ La Serrata ” substation (280 MWA), which was completed last year. The electricity is then fed into Red Eléctrica’s national grid.

SENS Ibérica as EPC service provider

Thanks to the PV experts from SENS Ibérica, the Spanish subsidiary of SENS, the investor Aquila Capital is already benefiting from the first two turnkey photovoltaic solutions within the Tinosa pipeline. However, such a large project scope also requires strong partners: the contractor for the entire pipeline is UTE Aurinka SENS, the existing consortium of SENS and their partner Aurinka International.

As an EPC service provider, the SENS team not only procured materials and built the solar parks, but also commissioned them. The previously carried out project development was realized by the long-term consortium partner Aurinka International. SENS will take over the subsequent maintenance work on the solar parks together with its partner Aurinka and continue the successful cooperation.

Photovoltaics and biodiversity in the desert

With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the Tabernas Desert is an ideal location for PV systems. In the future, however, the region in southern Spain will not only benefit from regenerative energy from solar power, but also from shady spots under the solar modules for native animal and plant species. They can hide there from the scorching sun, which increases the quality of life and biodiversity. In addition, the compensatory measures required by the environmental authority include a variety of options for promoting the native fauna: Perches, watering places, feeding stations, plantings for feeding, caves and much more are being implemented in the Tabernas desert.
