Solar Team Twente will participate in the Solar Challenge Morocco in October, an alternative to the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia.

The University of Twente announced this on Friday. The Solar Challenge Morocco was created because the Australian Solar Car race was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The organisation of the World Solar Challenge announced in February that the event will not take place this year, much to the disappointment of the Twente team.

“THE NINETEEN STUDENTS PUT ASIDE THEIR STUDIES FOR A YEAR AND A HALF TO DESIGN AND BUILD A WORLD-CLASS SOLAR CAR. ALL FOCUS IS ON THE RACE IN AUSTRALIA”, THE UNIVERSITY WROTE IN THE POST.

In order to be able to hold a big international race, the Solar Challenge Morocco has been created. Fifty teams race in five stages through the south of Morocco.

The stages are divided over five days. The race begins and ends in the port city of Agadir. The total distance is 2,500 kilometers, about 500 kilometers less than the Australian outback race. The team with the fastest overall distance wins.

Solar Team Twente participates in the RED Horizon, its latest model. However, the solar car is more suitable for the Australian landscape than that in Morocco, partly because of the altitude differences in the Sahara.

“The new route and the unknown landscape are a great challenge for the whole team,” says Judith Tel, the team’s strategist and electrical engineer.
