SALEM : The Salem municipal corporation (SMC) has installed solar panels atop its buildings in all the four zones at a cost of Rs 3.55 crore under the smart city project. Corporation commissioner R Sadheesh told TOI that the move would help them save Rs 60 lakh on electricity bills a year.

“Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had inaugurated the solar panels that have a capacity to produce 471.54-kilowatt (KW) electricity two months ago,” he said. Solar panel installation is one of the schemes under the smart city project.

The corporation commissioner said the solar panels would be able to produce 40,067.50 units of electricity a month and nearly 1.46 crore units a year.

Pointing out that they were earlier paying nearly Rs 10 lakh on electricity bills, he said the cost had come down to Rs 5 lakh in the past two months.

He said panels with a capacity to produce about 52.56KW electricity have been set up in Suramangalam zone, while Hasthampatty zone has got panels with a capacity to produce 208.66KW electricity. The total capacity of solar panels in Ammapet zone is 152.61KW and those in Kondalampatty zone is 57.71KW.

“We will also install more solar panels in the city and are trying our best to minimize electricity charges,” Sadheesh said.
