They make up part of a total 64 fast charge points being installed across Gwent

Work on eight new dual electric vehicle charging points has been completed in Blaenau Gwent this month and are now available for use.

The announcement from the borough council comes as the Welsh Government revealed plans to invest £30 million into increasing the number of electric charging points in Wales, with the aim of developing the infrastructure for the vehicles of the future.

They make up part of a total 64 fast charge points that are being installed right across Gwent at the moment, after the council was awarded a share of £465,000 funding from the UK Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles.

The joint bid was put together by a number of local authorities, supported by the Energy Saving Trust, and submitted by Blaenau Gwent Council.

The project has also been backed by the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales.

The new Blaenau Gwent charge points have been installed in:

• Colliers Row, Ebbw Vale, NP23 6ES

• King St/Worcester Street, Brynmawr, NP23 4FD

• High Street, Blaina, NP13 3AF

• Abertillery Sports Centre, NP13 1QD

Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration & Economic Development, Councillor Dai Davies said this move was yet another step towards the council becoming a carbon neutral organisation in the future.

He said: “Our commitment as a Council to protecting our environment and helping to address the climate emergency remains strong, and we continue to support renewable energy and the move towards becoming a carbon neutral organisation in the future.

“The use of electric vehicles is very important in this vision and we’re delighted to have worked with partners across the region on this exciting project, which is a milestone in establishing an infrastructure across Gwent that will provide our residents with the opportunity to drive electric vehicles.”
