Agartala : Tripura government has announced plans to install micro-grid solar power plants in 23 remote villages where providing electricity through conventional sources of power is not possible, said Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma here on Saturday, who holds the power portfolio.

Mr Verma on Saturday inaugurated a 2-Kilowatt micro-grid solar power plant at Sarkipara in Nunacherra ADC village under Mungiakami block of Khowai district, which is lighting up the hamlet of 14 families for the first time with electricity.

The villagers have long been demanding power supply for a long time but, erecting a power line to such a distance for less than 100 people was not feasible. Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has taken up the initiative to ensure power supply to the non-electrified villages and the state government has approved the plan for installation of the proposed micro-grid solar power plants in 23 villages at the cost of Rs 2.30 Cr, Dev Varma stated.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said that as many as 12,000 solar lights were already distributed in various remote areas and a plan to distribute another 15,000 solar lights was also in the pipeline. In that case, the Aspirational Blocks would be given priority. With the initiative of
TREDA and financial assistance of Tribal Welfare department, a total 11 solar street lights, three solar lights for 14 families each and one charger point were provided to Sarkipara.
