In Detail : West Bengal is expanding its renewable energy efforts by inviting bids for a 6 MW floating solar project. This initiative aims to utilize water bodies for solar power generation, promoting sustainable energy solutions. By harnessing floating solar technology, the state seeks to reduce land use while maximizing clean energy production.

Floating solar projects are gaining popularity due to their efficiency and ability to minimize water evaporation. In line with this, the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI), a Coal India subsidiary, has invited bids for a 5 MW floating solar project at the quarry sump of Dalmia OCP Salanpur Area. The project is expected to be completed within 270 days of the work order.

Additionally, the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Universal Transformers for setting up 22.5 MW of grid-connected floating solar projects. These projects will be developed across three thermal power plants: Bakreswar (10 MW), Santhaldih (7.5 MW), and Sagardidhi (5 MW).

West Bengal’s focus on floating solar projects reflects its strategic move toward integrating renewable energy into its power infrastructure. These initiatives not only contribute to clean energy generation but also help reduce the state’s carbon footprint. By utilizing existing water bodies, the state is optimizing space and enhancing energy efficiency.
