The Zeerust Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power plant has commenced commercial operations, having achieved full compliance on January 1.

Located in the municipality of Zeerust, North West Province, South Africa, the 75MW plant is currently the largest solar PV plant in the province and is estimated to generate approximately 180 GWh per year from its 250,080 solar panels.

Zeerust is connected to state-owned Eskom’s Kameeldoorn switching station, which supplies power to the national grid. The 100% South African-owned plant will contribute valuable renewable energy to the country, as well as benefit the rural community through economic development and job creation.

The plant employed an estimated 1,000 locals during its construction and established extensive economic development projects targeting education, youth development, health, food security and welfare. It is expected to further boost economic development in the area and establish the province as a major player in the renewable energy sector.

“Extensive economic development projects kicked off during our project’s construction period to provide COVID-19 relief, in addition to enterprise development training and accelerator programs, skills development training and other welfare initiatives,” said Isaac Mmushi, CEO of Zeerust Solar.
