General Electric Co.’s renewable energy unit won a contract to sell 1.2 gigawatts of onshore wind turbines to projects in Spain, according to a statement. GE will provide its 3-megawatt machine to Madrid-based Forestalia Group, which is developing a series of wind farms in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2018 with commissioning before the end of the following year.
The wind farms build on Forestalia’s winning bid in Spain’s first renewable energy auction last January, where it won permits to build 408.5 megawatts of wind and biomass, according to the statement. About 35 projects may be constructed by Forestalia, according to Eduardo Sanchez Salcedo, a spokesman for the company.
Sanchez declined to disclose details on financing, saying Forestalia is in advanced discussions with several partners.
Spain on Wednesday took bids to supply at least another 2 gigawatts and as much as 3 gigawatts of additional renewable energy.
