  • In first phase, biogas plants will be set-up in Gujarat
  • In phase 2, both companies would endeavour to implement Biogas projects on pan-India basis

Ahmedabad: Abellon CleanEnergy Limited, an integrated sustainable energy solutions provider has entered into a pact with Germany’s Agraferm Group for setting up biogas plants pan India. Under this strategic technical tie-up, Abellon will set up multiple Biogas plants in Gujarat in the initial phase, with technical support from Agraferm GmbH.

The Biogas plants will be developed using different sets of feedstock including animal waste, food & kitchen waste, garden waste and agricultural residues or process residues available in locations around the proposed projects. In phase 2, both companies would endeavour to implement Biogas projects on pan-India basis.

Commenting on this development, Mr. Aditya Handa, MD& CEO, Abellon CleanEnergy Limited said, “Since its inception, Abellon has been exploring all aspects of the bio-refinery value chain, with a view to contribute to sustainable energy generation in the country. The announcement of SATAT (Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation), and national goal to set up 5000 Biogas plants across India, gives us the opportunity to participate in this segment. We are happy to have Agraferm as our strategic technical partner and I believe our complementing strengths will enable us to set up world class Biogas plants uniquely tailored to the Indian context.”

Mr. Eike Liekweg, MD, Agraferm GmbH said, “Agraferm has a substantial track record of setting up Biogas projects in Europe. We are very excited to be in India and explore the opportunity to contribute to the country’s Biogas mission in partnership with Abellon – a company that is recognized as a pioneer in the Bioenergy sector in India. We look forward to doing great work together.”

Abellon is a pioneer in the bioenergy segment in India, and has over a decade of experience across biomass based power generation and biomass pellets and equipment for clean cooking and heating. The company is also setting up city-based Waste to Energy (WtE) projects at 5 cities in Gujarat under PPP model, and is poised to move forward in developing its Biogas business vertical.

The Agraferm Group is one of the few providers of turnkey based biogas plants using agricultural, kitchen, food & dairy wastes in the world and has developed 90+ biogas plants with combined capacity of 120MWe worldwide.

Biogas has emerged as a promising renewable energy which converts agricultural, animal, industrial and municipal wastes into energy and can be integrated with strategies to improve sanitation as well as reduce indoor air pollution. Currently, the total Biogas production in India is 2.07 billion m3/year. This is quite low compared to its potential, which is estimated to be in the range of 29–48 billion m3/year. Such plants setting up in India would help accelerate the production of Biogas in India.
