Renewable-energy developers Access Energy Group and Eren RE are prepping construction of 10-megawatt solar-photovoltaic plant in Uganda that will supply about 40,000 homes and businesses with electricity in the eastern town of Soroti.Construction will begin on the $19 million plant in March and it should be connected to the grid by July, Dubai-based Access said in an e-mailed statement. The Dutch development bank FMO and the London-based Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund provided a senior debt facility for the project, which had originally been expected to cost $17 million when it was announced in December 2014

“The limited availability of the grid in Africa plays an important role for the deployment of renewables,” said Access chairman and managing director Reda El Chaar by phone. “Ten to 50 megawatts can be effectively plugged into the infrastructure.”Access operates throughout Africa and is currently working on three solar PV projects in Egypt with a combined capacity of nearly 190 megawatts. It’s also developing sun-powered plants in Kenya and Ghana and plans to expand to Central Asia.
