Civic body to install solar traffic signals
Nine crossroads of the city will soon get a new look as officials of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) have decided to install solar powered traffic signal system .
The move came after clashes between IMC and police department over payment of conventional traffic signals’ power bills.
In the first phase of the project, civic body plans to install solar traffic signals at nine squares including Patrakar Colony, Gopur square, Chanakyapuri square, White Church, Kalani Nagar, Anand Bazar square, Pipliyahan square, MR-9 and Footi Kothi.
“Initially, IMC will install solar powered traffic signals at three squares including White Church, Footi Kothi and MR-9 on a trial run,” said IMC’s road and transport department wing in-charge Dilip Sharma. He said that they have completed the measurement work for these three squares. “The project would be carried out in phase-wise manner,” he added.
Under the project, conventional traffic lights would be removed to install fresh system at the chosen crossings. These signals will be inter-connected with wireless system so that they will be synchronized with each other for smooth regulation of traffic. Light emitting diodes (LED) will be used in signal lights. It lasts for years and is energy efficient and produces a significant amount of light.
Civic body officials said that they were coordinating with traffic police authorities to bring them to the city. They said solar panel signals are already working on 12-km long Bus Route Transit System (BRTS) corridor in city, and hopefully the light would begin to work by the end of this year. “The project would cost around Rs 2 crore,” they said, while adding that the civic body has also finalized a private agency to carry out this work.
“The project would help conserve energy and ensure smooth vehicular movement as solar energy would be operating the traffic lights,” they added.
