ENGIE Resources Reaches Renewable Energy Credit Milestone: One Million Passenger Vehicle Emissions Displaced

HOUSTON: ENGIE Resources announced today that it has now supplied enough Green-e® certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) to displace the estimated greenhouse gas emissions of more than 1 million passenger vehicles driven for a year.  A REC is created when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource.

Since ENGIE began offering RECs in 2007, the company has seen considerable growth in its renewable product offerings, which now help commercial, industrial, and institutional customers across the U.S. meet their sustainability commitments.

RECs encourage the development of domestic sources of renewable energy while giving customers a low-risk opportunity to strengthen environmentally responsible brands.  Each REC represents the environmental attributes or benefits associated with a specific quantity of energy generated from a renewable source, such as solar or wind.

J.D. Burrows, Vice President of Marketing for ENGIE Resources, said news of the renewable milestone illustrates ENGIE’s commitment to the Energy Revolution it launched years ago to offer customers new low-carbon, environmentally sound energy options.

“As a leader in the movement to broaden customer value, ENGIE remains focused on promoting new ways for energy market participants to respond to a range of challenges taking shape today,” explained Burrows.  “RECs provide a great opportunity for customers to speed progress toward sustainability goals with minimal contract complexity and exposure to price and volume risks.”

In addition to displacing the annual greenhouse gas emissions of more than 1 million passenger vehicles driven, ENGIE’s supply of RECs is also equivalent to:

  • 1,966,966 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled
  • Carbon sequestered by 6,660,345 acres of U.S. forests in one year
  • 189,102,154 incandescent lamps switched to LED
