Fully committed to the energy transition of its territory, Bordeaux Métropole is taking a new step in its Climate Plan with the creation of the geothermal heat network of the Plaine Rive Droite which will serve the districts of Brazza, Niel, Benauge and Garonne-Eiffel. To meet Bordeaux Métropole’s expectations, ENGIE-ENGIE subsidiaries Cofely and Storengy have joined forces to present a unique integrated offer for deep geothermal energy, combining ENGIE Cofely’s know-how in the field of Heat and expertise of Storengy in the exploration and development of the subsoil. By retaining ENGIE’s offer, Bordeaux Métropole has chosen an actor who is committed to the long term on all the dimensions of an ambitious project that marks the renewal of deep geothermal energy in France. The concession is granted to ENGIE for 30 years.

82% of renewable energies

The Conseil de Bordeaux Métropole has chosen geothermal energy as a source of green energy for its heating network. A strong sign of its commitment, the Council decided to explore a new geological horizon with a view to finding a deeper and warmer resource: it was a first in France for 30 years, outside the Paris region. The natural heat of deep aquifers will meet 82% of the heat requirement, with natural gas being the main source of heat. After obtaining all the administrative authorizations, the phase of work dedicated to the heat network will begin. The geothermal doublet, consisting of a producer well and a reinjection well, which will begin at the beginning of 2019 and will last 4 months, will be carried out by Storengy, an ENGIE subsidiary, with strong expertise in geosciences and design, Development and operation of boreholes.

A natural integration into the landscape of the right bank

Designed by the Bordeaux firm Moon Safari, the central heating plant will refer to the local industrial heritage. Naturally integrated into the landscape, this emblematic building will be built from durable materials.

A house of citizen energies

ENGIE will build a house of citizen energies that will accommodate both the residents of the metropolis and the school classes, with interactive educational programs adapted to each one. The house of the energies citizens will be adjoining the boiler room in order to be able very easily to make visits of the equipments of energy production. It will bring together all the stakeholders of the project and establish a lasting link between them in favor of energy transition.
