India’s focus on renewable energy is paying off. We added 10000 megawatts of solar capacity in 2017-18, almost twice the increase we saw in the previous year. Solar tariffs have hit a record low of Rs 2.44 per unit making it comparable to thermal power. Shereen Bhan catches up with experts to find what needs to be done to keep the momentum going.

India’s focus on renewable energy is paying off. We added 10000 megawatts of solar capacity in 2017-18, almost twice the increase we saw in the previous year. Solar tariffs have hit a record low of Rs 2.44 per unit making it comparable to thermal power.

While India’s current solar capacity stands at 20 gigawatts, the government believes it is on course to meet the ambitious target of 100 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2022.

In 2017-18 Telangana and Karnataka installed over 2 gigawatts each and accounted for almost 50 percent of all installations across the country.

However there are some headwinds the industry will have to contend with – higher import duties, the poor health of discoms and the uncertainty over tax treatment could hurt the solar mission. Shereen Bhan catches up with experts to find what needs to be done to keep the momentum going.
