Germany’s Federal Network Agency has kicked off another offshore wind auction, seeking proposals for the deployment of 1.8 GW of turbines in the North Sea that should be connected to the grid in 2028

The tender involves four sites — two of them are located in the so-called area N-3, about 35 km (21.75 mi) north of Norderney island with a total potential generation capacity of 900 MW. The two other sites are about 90 km northwest of Borkum and have the potential to accommodate a combined 900 MW of wind turbines.

All four sites are pre-examined which means that the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has studied the areas to collect information about the marine environment, the subsoil and the wind and oceanographic conditions. Interested developers will have access to the data as part of the call for applications and the winners in the tender will be able to apply for planning permission without carrying out the studies.

Developers are invited to submit bids by August 1, 2023.

This is the second offshore wind auction launched in Germany this year. At the end of January, the Federal Network Agency offered four areas in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea that have the potential to host 7 GW of generation capacity.
