The Lithuanian government is getting ready to launch a tender for a site in the Baltic Sea that could become home to a 700-MW wind farm, the Ministry of Energy said last week.

The Ministry of Energy has released the drafts of the government’s resolutions regarding the proposed project location for public consultation. The requirements for potential participants in the tender are also available to the public.

The project for what will create the country’s maiden offshore wind complex is planned to be realised without state subsidies. Developers will be chosen through a competitive round that will seek the highest bid and is due to be launched on March 30.

According to the statement, the offshore wind farm will be installed in Lithuanian waters some 36 kilometres (22.4 miles) off the coast and should become operational by 2028. Its output is expected to cover up to a quarter of the country’s national electricity consumption.

Apart from building the wind farm, the winner of the tender will have to conduct an environmental impact assessment and other research as well as install transmission infrastructure to evacuate electricity to the grid.

Lithuania targets 100% of electricity from renewables by 2050. In the autumn of this year, it plans to carry out a second offshore wind solicitation, the government said.
