lanning to buy an electric vehicle? If yes, then there is some good news for you. The government is mulling several steps that will help buyers save some money if they are intending to go for this environment friendly option.

As per a report by The Economic Times, the government is planning to provide a rebate amounting to Rs 50,000 on purchase of electric vehicles. This, coupled with according them the status of priority sector and bringing down the interest rates on loans, is expected to shore up the sale of such automobiles in India.

At present, electric vehicles cost 2-2.5 times more than their standard variants. There are also concerns about the overall infrastructure available for operating such vehicles and the kilometers they are going to churn out after every charge.

A senior government official told the publication that the idea is to give enough incentives so that the prices of electric vehicles match the current conventional internal combustion engines so that prospective buyers start giving preferences to electric vehicles over conventional vehicles.

The government can roll out a plan with regard to incentivizing the purchase of electric vehicles in select cities in the first phase. However, for electric vehicles to become more popular in our country adequate infrastructure is necessary.

The official also said that for popularising electric vehicles the states could waive road taxes and registration charges on them and also exempt them from parking charges.

Among the upcoming electric vehicles in India are Hyundai Kona, Nissan Leaf and Audi e-Tron.
