In Short : Power demand in Greater Hyderabad’s urban circles is surging, projected to exceed 5,000 MW this summer. On April 23, demand hit 4,136 MW. Key areas like Cyber City and Banjara Hills saw sharp increases. TGSPDCL has strengthened infrastructure with new transformers and real-time monitoring systems to ensure uninterrupted power supply amid rising urban consumption and summer heat.

In Detail : Power demand across Greater Hyderabad’s urban circles is witnessing a significant surge, with peak loads expected to cross 5,000 MW this summer, compared to 4,352 MW recorded last year. On April 23 alone, the city registered a demand of 4,136 MW and consumed 88.25 million units, up from 3,745 MW and 79.84 million units on the same day last year.

The Cyber City circle, covering areas like Gachibowli, Ibrahimbagh, and Kondapur, recorded the highest rise in demand with a 31.75% increase over the previous year. Other urban circles such as Banjara Hills and Medchal also reported substantial hikes in consumption at 22.62% and 20.24%, respectively, indicating a broader trend of rising electricity usage in Hyderabad’s fast-growing urban zones.

To manage this escalating demand, TGSPDCL (Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited) has implemented multiple upgrades to its power infrastructure. This includes the installation of additional transformers and feeders, along with the rollout of a Feeder Outage Management System covering more than 5,000 feeders. These enhancements aim to improve service reliability and responsiveness during peak periods.

Advanced monitoring systems have been introduced to observe feeder performance and load changes in real time. This allows for quicker identification and resolution of faults, minimizing outages and enabling better load balancing across the network. These tools have proven effective, especially in handling sudden spikes in usage due to extreme weather or other disruptions.

Despite occasional challenges such as natural calamities affecting operations, TGSPDCL has shown a strong record in swiftly restoring services. During incidents involving disruptions to over 350 feeders, the company’s senior staff managed rapid response efforts, ensuring power was reinstated in minimal time through coordinated field operations.

Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Ali Faruqui stressed the importance of strict adherence to line clearance protocols and enhanced coordination between Transco and Discom engineers. Preventive maintenance and timely repairs remain a top priority, especially with rural demand declining after the Yasangi season, shifting the load burden primarily to urban centers battling high summer temperatures.
